WHAT IS A DAILY DAY LIKE FOR YOU?
As a star tup entrepreneur, ever y day is completely different (and ver y long!).
I start my day around 6am with exercise — when you live on very little
sleep you need to get your mind straight. The morning usually consists of
meetings with NYC or Europe based clients (new or existing) and our NYC
of fice. Mid-morning is usually centered on product updates and launches. I
am heavily involved in the produc t development and try to provide the team
with a customer-centric perspective. Great execution is the secret sauce and
I focus on amazing product updates that our customers will love. I never take
lunch so it is usually a great time to catch up on email at my desk. Afternoons
are a mixed bag: anything from interviews with prospective hires (as we are
growing so fast, finding good people is priority), to finance updates, marketing
initiatives, business strategy, to in-person meetings with fashion brands &
retailers. My last meeting usually finishes around 7p.m . This is about the time
that I actually star t working through my own key priorities: emails, ac tionable
items, product strategy, etc. My two little dogs usually start getting restless
after a long day at the office, so we all head home around 8:30/9p.m . I grab a
glass of wine to kick back into work ‘til bedtime around midnight.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?
There is so much. At the moment, the fact that NuORDER is responsible
for changing how the fashion industry does business is what drives and
motivates me every day. I love the people I work with — we are all on the same
mission and journey together. The fact that I work with some of the greatest
fashion brands and retailers ever y single day doesn’t hurt either. It doesn’t feel
like a job! I always get to see what is being designed and what trends are coming
up way before the majority of consumers do. I love getting a sneak peak and
planning my future wardrobe every time I spend time with my customers.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
My husband, Heath Wells, who is the other co-founder of the business. We’ve been
working together for nine years and we are the best team. No one can stop us.
HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK?
My love for my two dogs (bichon-frise!) has enabled me to develop a deep
passion in helping animal shelters. This includes walking sheltered dogs on
the weekend whenever I can. I also make financial contributions to shelters. I
have a close relationship with a specific shelter called Fur Baby (where I assist
in dog walking), which is in downtown LA. Downtown LA is one of the worst
areas for animal shelters — there is so much overcrowding. As I have my own
web development team we built them a website to help them promote their
animals and increase donations (which they so desperately need). Check it out
at http://furbabyrescue.org. One of my upcoming programs at NuORDER will
be to include a mandator y donation within the subscription contrac t for ever y
new brand that we sign. Every little bit counts.

WHAT ARE YOUR STAPLE ITEMS?
I have an obsession with leather jackets and structured blazers. It defines my
style and adds a rocker edge to my everyday look. Right now I’m wearing my
Kimberly Ovitz soft black leather jacket and Helmut blazer with large shoulder
pads with ever ything. I also love slouchy style pants, whether they are silk,
leather or cotton — I have a pair from just about ever y designer out there! They
are so comfy and effortlessly chic for my day-to-day work life.
WHAT ARE YOU FAVORITE TRENDS RIGHT NOW?
For spring/summer, I love the black and white trend that’s ever ywhere right
now. I am monochromatic in every way — from the clothes I buy, to the way
that I design my office and house — so this trend now is an extra perk. Fall
2013 also shows plenty of winter white and I’m happy to carry it through. I’m
also obsessed with the strong-shouldered coats.
WHAT COMES UP MOST RECENTLY PLAYED ON YOUR IPOD?
I can’t get enough of ‘Get Lucky’ at the moment (Daft Punk feat Pharrell
Williams). But anything Kanye West or Jay-Z is always on my playlist.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANY UPCOMING FASHION
Firstly, to not give up at the first sign of hardship. It’s a hard business to
succeed in and you’ll hit some road blocks and hurdles early on. Don’t take
your foot off the pedal and remember why you wanted to be a designer in
the first place. Secondly, make sure you know what your point of difference is
(that will translate to customers). In today’s world there are so many brands and
choices, you need to ensure that you have a compelling story and point of view
that will set you apar t from all the noise.
WHAT IS THE HAPPIEST MEMORY YOU HAVE?
Definitely my wedding. My husband and I waited nine years before we decided
to get married as our key focus first was to build our business and find that
oppor tunity that was going to define the rest of our future together. We got
married in a beautiful house in the Hollywood Hills that we rented out for seven
days. We flew our family and friends over from Australia and it was a week’s worth
of celebration and fun with a group of people who really mattered to us.
WORDS TO LIVE BY?
Have no regrets and never give up. I would rather fail time and time again knowing
that I gave it my all, rather than wondering ‘what if’ or ‘I wish I had done that.’
