MODEL IS COMING BACK WITH CYCLE 21. HOW DO YOU
FEEL ABOUT THE SHOW BECOMING A MAIN STAY IN POP
CULTURE? WHY DO YOU THINK ANTM IS A FAN FAVORITE?
It’s really mind blowing what Top Model has evolved into.
Sometimes I think about being that young model with an idea
for a television show and how far it has come. People send me
photos on social media or take photos with me in person and
say, “Smize,” instead of, “Cheese.” Words like “Tooch” and
“Booch” that I made up are now mainstream. That’s a true sign
of a pop culture mainstay, and I’m so excited by that. I think the
show is still a fan favorite because modeling has always been a
subject of fascination for people. It used to be an impenetrable
field of sky-high genetic freaks, and now people can peek into a
model’s life and see what it really takes to make it in that field.
Also, for some reason, people like to see models fall.
» YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE TECH INDUSTRY AND
INVESTING IN STARTUPS VIA FIERCE CAPITAL PUTS YOU
ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF TECH MEETING FASHION.
YOU’VE BEEN INCORPORATING NEW TECHNOLOGY ON
ANTM, WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT TO YOU? DO YOU AIM
TO BRIDGE THE TWO TOGETHER FURTHER WITH FUTURE
I’m always looking for the next big thing, fashion or otherwise,
so incorporating new photographic technology into Top Model
was a natural evolution. We now use “moving photos” via Flixel,
which is a groundbreaking app that allows you to freeze and
move certain elements of a photo to create a “living image.”
Top Model is a show that has grown in tandem with the fashion
industry, which is now streaming fashion week shows live to
viewers at home. So, it’s very important to me to keep ANTM
fresh and on the cutting edge of fashion and tech, and I will
always seek out new ways to do that.
“IT USED TO BE AN
IMPENETRABLE FIELD OF
SKY-HIGH GENETIC FREAKS,
AND NOW PEOPLE CAN PEEK
INTO A MODEL’S LIFE AND
SEE WHAT IT REALLY TAKES TO
MAKE IT IN THAT FIELD.”
» YOU WERE REALLY THE FIRST TO CREATE A FASHION-
REALITY BASED SHOW. AFTER OVER A DECADE OF
SUCCESS, WHAT IS YOUR NEW GOAL AS A TELEVISION
It’s super impor tant to me to be innovative in my ideas and not
a copycat. There are so many copycats of different shows and
formats now. There have been a ton of Top Model copycats
over the years. Being the first to break into a certain genre
or production style and being UNIQUE is how I approach
television. I have a lot of ideas on my creative slate right now that
incorporate digital platforms and out of the box ideas. I really
believe that the future of how people will be consuming their
enter tainment is not just staring at a screen and I try to think
about producing through that lens.
» YOUR WHOLE CAREER HAS BEEN ABOUT BREAKING
BARRIERS IN THE MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRIES.
WHAT IS THE NEXT BOUNDARY YOU AIM TO CROSS?
TV production has been a really big part of my career and it’s a
huge passion of mine but the core message that I’ve maintained
throughout my life has always been about how women view
themselves and expanding that definition of beauty. With all of
the futuristic and forward thinking ideas around us, the subject
of body image and beauty is really stuck in the rut of the
past. I am working on a huge, fun, immersive project now that
is sure to cross the boundaries of how women view themselves
and how the world views them.
» YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION TO MILLIONS OF ASPIRING
BUSINESSWOMEN WORLDWIDE. WHO IS YOUR GREATEST
My greatest inspiration has really always been my mother.
My mom gave me the perfect amounts of both strength and
empathy to be a leader and role model in the business and
beauty worlds. I’m so grateful to my mother for inspiring me
with her own dedication and passion for the things that are
important to her. I also find inspiration in the work of Oprah
and Mar tha Stewart who have built powerhouse brands based
on their deeply ingrained message and talents. I am additionally
inspired beyond females to people like Walt Disney and Richard
Branson, whose companies stand on their own name but were
built by amazingly innovative minds and will be remembered for
generations to come.
